Alphabet Soup, (09)

Hello, It's Alphabet Soup day again and I've reached J for Joy, J for Jane, J for Jesus and J for Jazz, how convenient there's more to it. Jane's got her Addiction, apparently Perry let the alliteration of Junkie Jane slip for the roommate's condition Jane's Addiction. Most of their work was written during their formative years (86-97) , after an indie - released semi live album, They burst on the scene with a phenomenal album, it was as if Led Zeppelin had re-emerged in the disguise of a bunch of californian punks with the assertiveness of a band that knows what it's doing. That the commercial success came with the next album is almost a rule after the previous caused the breakthru. Considering only about half bought the best Jane's Addiction had the world to offer there's was no hesitation posting this 5 stars one. J for Jesus Loves You was Boy George's attempt to rid him self of that moniker, one that btw (surprise surprise) wasn't honoured, a lot of record company's around the world still released it under the Boy's moniker. I have to say i really liked the generations of love track, great intro, contemplative lyrics and the Boy is a great singer. With this album he tried to break free from his shadow helped by some remixers that would make a name for themselves in years to come. Alas the album didnt get the credit it deserved, and in the end Boy George came out worse...For 2 decades Jazz Butcher has released albums, and often to much acclaim, but a household name no, likely because his main label Creation lacked the funds for video 's , a pity, the world can do with Jazz Butchers humor and insights.

Jane's Addiction - Nothing's Shocking ( 88 ^ 99mb)

Jane's Addiction formed out of the ashes of frontman Perry Farrell's previous band, Psi-com. In the summer of 1985, Farrell was searching for a new bass player for the faltering Psi-com when he was introduced to Eric Avery. Farrell and Avery bonded, even though Avery never did become a full-fledged member of Farrell's disintegrating group.Later, Eric's sister introduced the duo to Stephen Perkins, whom she was dating at the time Perkins in turn suggested that his friend Dave Navarro might be a suitable guitar player for the new band, dubbed "Jane's Addiction" in honor of Farrell's housemate, Jane Bainter, who was heavily addicted to drugs.

The band became a sensation on the Los Angeles club scene, primarily headlining at Scream. They soon gained interest from a variety of record labels. Most of their catalogue was written then (86-87). While they had decided to sign with Warner Bros. Records, the band insisted on releasing their debut on an independent record label first. The first record, Jane's Addiction, was a live recording with heavy overdubs released on Triple X Records. Their major label debut Nothing's Shocking was released in 1988. The album was certified Gold and got them nominated for a Grammy Award .

With the market awakened to them the breakthrough came with the release of Ritual de lo Habitual in 1990. The singles "Stop!" and "Been Caught Stealing" topped the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and the video for the latter song won the first MTV Video Music Award for Best Alternative Video. But the album itself was clearly weaker than it's extremely vibrant predecessor something that must have knawed at the band and created uncertainty as to where to go, they were not supposed to follow the commercial pressures but then why not ? Well after the the first Lollapalooza festival tour Farrell had organised it became clear that it was to be the band's farewell tour.

Farrell turned up with Porno for the Pyros two years later, releasing two albums , other band members had only marginal success with their efforts. In 2001 the band got together again to release Strays. a somewhat unhinged combination of old and new work and very much in the then trendy nu metal style , it didnt do much justice to the music their popularity had been build upon. And after the support tour had ended they more or less decided they'd had enough of eachother. This year Perry reappeared as Perry Farrell's Satellite Party releasing Ultra Payloaded.

Jesus Loves You - The Martyr Mantras (91, 70min * 99mb )

At the end of the 80s, with his solo career in post- heroin addiction doldrums, Boy George elected to release increasingly dance-oriented tracks under the alias Jesus Loves You via his Virgin-funded imprint More Protein. For his writers credit he named himself Angela Dust. This creative rebirth was a clever move - clubland and critics praised the songs. It's deep house music, which is to say, the beat moves in a fast shuffle, surrounded by a prominent bass pulse. Now and then, George emerges from the tracks, notably on the near-ballad "I Specialize In Love," and on those occasions his usual virtues as a singer--an aching, vulnerable tenor voice with a good rhythmic sense and clear articulation--come to the fore. The 1991 album, The Martyr Mantras, included George's first UK top 40 hit since 1987, Bow Down Mister - a song originally written for an aborted Culture Club reunion.

A second album, Popularity Breeds Contempt, was written and scheduled for a late '92 release. Its lead single, Sweet Toxic Love c/w Am I Losing Control, missed the charts, and the album disappeared from release schedules. 1995 saw the return of the Boy George moniker and a move away from the dancefloor.

Jazz Butcher Conspiracy - Waiting For the Love Bus ( 93, 59:40 * 99mb)

The Conspiracy was started in Northampton in 1983 by Pat Fish ( Patrick Huntrods ), an Oxford philosophy graduate, and it's been in his charge since, making a total of twelve studio records and a couple of live recordings as well. The Jazz Butcher and his unflappable guitarist Max Eider first surfaced in 1983 with the release of Bath Of Bacon on the small London independent label Glass Records. Melody Maker recommended the album to "Anyone looking for something really wild,"

The second Jazz Butcher album in 1984, A Scandal In Bohemia, attracted much more attention, and over the next year Pat and Max (together with the rhythm section of David J. (formerly of Bauhaus) and Owen Jones) toured the U.K. and Europe in support of the album, which figured for weeks on the independent charts. Sounds called the following album, Sex And Travel, "The best pop record in the world. Seriously." In the summer of 1986 a compilation of the Butcher's early recordings, Bloody Nonsense, was released in America, where it made No. 2 on the Gavin and CMJ charts. But after releasing a fourth album, Distressed Gentlefolk, and undertaking another European tour, the Butcher and Max parted ways. Max went on releasing his solo album The Best Kisser In The World in 1987, while the Butcher continued his career by signing with Creation Records.

The Butcher's 1988 album, Fishcotheque, was praised in Rolling Stone as establishing the Butcher as "King of his own particular musical domain," and a sold-out summer tour of North America helped to make the album the Butcher's biggest seller to date. 1989 saw the release of Big Planet, Scarey Planet, which succeeded in topping MTV's alternative chart. Endless touring followed, with only a brief break to record Cult Of The Basement, it featured the radio hit "She's On Drugs" and the single "Girl-Go." Melody Maker found the album to be "As languid and graceful a slice of slush as you could dare to dream." The Butcher next recorded Condition Blue in 1991. The Butcher remained with Creation and released two more albums.

Waiting for Waiting For The Love Bus, released in 1993, was described by the Trouser Press Record Guide as "Fish at his most seductive and romantic, and it makes for his greatest achievement ...in all, the perfect Jazz Butcher recording, one that would be hard to top for sheer entertainment value." Illuminate, the tenth Jazz Butcher album, which former member David J. produced, was released in 1995. The Jazz Butcher then ended his relationship with Creation in 1996, and began working on other music projects, including acting as evil mastermind behind Northampton-based Sumosonic. But unexpectedly, the Butcher and Max Eider began to perform together once again, although only sparingly at first, and only at occasional live events.

Over the next few years a fervent demand to see the two great co-conspirators began to boil-over. Fans world-wide were amazed and excited by the prospect of a Jazz Butcher Conspiracy that featured both Pat and Max. So it was decided that a United States tour was in order, and in September 1999 Pat and Max arrived Stateside to perform at sold-out shows in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, and New York, where they were accompanied by other old-school Jazz Butcher musicians Owen Jones, and David J. and Kevin Haskins (both of Bauhaus and Love And Rockets fame). It had been thirteen years since Pat and Max last toured the U.S. together.

The response was so resoundingly positive that only one thing could result: Max Eider has officially rejoined the Jazz Butcher Conspiracy! The year 2000 finds The Jazz Butcher Conspiracy - Pat Fish and Max Eider - very busy indeed. A live album entitled Glorious And Idiotic, recorded at a 1999 show in Hamburg, was released in February 2000 by Reachout International Records (ROIR) of New York. Pat and Max returned to the recording studio, for a fresh album of all new material 'Rotten Soul"( 2000).
Since, 2 compilation albums have been released "Cake City" from the Glass records days (83-86) and in 2003 "The Jazz Butchers Free Lunch compiling Creation Records days (87-96). Pat Fish doesn't seem to interested in releasing new material currently, but by now an Oxford philosophy graduate should have become totally relativistic about the music industry.
